The Alnwick Poison Garden

The Alnwick Poison Garden boasts some of the world’s most dangerous plants, hence the name. Behind big black gates, the carefully curated garden contains about 100 varieties illegal narcotics including poppies, which are used to make opium, the poisonous Atropa belladonna (also known as deadly nightshade), Strychnos nux-vomica (used to make strychnine), Coca (from which cocaine is produced), hemlock (used to kill Socrates), cannabis and more.

The current Duchess of Northumberland decided to revamp the gardens when she became mistress of Alnwick Castle. The project began around 2000, but she did not begin the Poison Garden until five years later. Inspired by the garden near Padua, Italy which was once used by the Medici’s to find better ways to kill their enemies, the Duchess decided to build a garden that was filled with narcotic, poisonous and deadly plants. The initial design included some medicinal plants, but she had them removed to maintain the concept of the Poison Garden.

It could happen to anyone. People bury a person alive to scare them or to get rid of them. In this situation, rely only on yourself.

Do not waste oxygen. In a classic coffin there’s only enough oxygen for about an hour, maybe two. Inhale deeply, exhale very slowly. Once inhaled - do not swallow, or you will start to hyperventilate. Do not light up lighters or matches, they will waste oxygen. Using a flashlight is allowed. Screaming increases anxiety, which causes increased heartbeat and therefore - waste of oxygen. So don’t scream.

Shake up the lid with your hands. In some cheap low-quality coffins you will be able to even make a hole (with an engagement ring or a belt buckle.)

Cross your arms over your chest, holding onto your shoulders with your hands, and pull the shirt off upward. Tie it in a knot above your head, like so: This will prevent you from suffocating when the dirt falls on your face.

Kick the lid with your legs. In some cheap coffins the lid is broken or damaged already after being buried, due to the weight of the ground above it.

As soon as the lid breaks, throw and move the dirt that falls through in the direction of your feet. When it takes up a lot of space, try pressing the ground to the sides of the coffin with your legs and feet. Move around a bit.

Whatever you do - your main goal is to sit up: dirt will fill up the empty space and move to your advantage, so no matter what - do not stop and try breathing steadily and calmly.

Get up. Remember: the dirt in the grave is very loose, so battling your way up will be easier than it seems. It’s the other way around during a rainy weather however, since water makes dirt heavy and sticky.

The haunting face of an Inuit child who died in Greenland in the 1400s. In 1972, hunters roaming near an abandoned Inuit settlement called Qilakitsoq chanced upon the graves of eight people. Six women and two children that had been buried in the mid-15th century beneath an overhanging rock that sheltered the burial site from sunlight, rain, and snow. Slowly but steadily, dry winds and subzero temperatures freeze-dried their remains as well as their sealskin and fur clothing. Museum curators today sometimes use a similar process of freeze-drying to conserve unearthed bog bodies and organic artifacts.

“In December of 2010, a nature photographer checked on a trail camera he’d set up to film wild animals in a reserve in Morgan City, Louisiana. The camera was smashed, but its SIM card survived. When the photographer uploaded the camera’s final images he was shocked at what he found. Instead of a wild animal, his camera caught the image of a ghostly, near-transparent humanoid figure. Ancient Siberian tattoo art, intricate patterns of 2,500-year-old tattoos, from the body of a Siberian ‘princess’ preserved in the permafrost have been revealed in Russia. The remarkable body art includes mythological creatures and experts say the elaborate drawings were a sign of age and status for the ancient nomadic Pazyryk people, described in the 5th century BC by the Greek historian Herodotus. Three tattooed mummies (c. 300 BC) were extracted from the permafrost of the Ukok Plateau in the second half of the 20th century.

The Bloody Benders were a family of serial killers who owned a small general store and inn in Osage township, Labette County, Kansas from 1872 to 1873. The inn was a dingy place called the Wayside Inn. The alleged family consisted of John Bender, his wife Kate, son John Jr. and daughter Kate. While most people believe John and Kate were brother and sister, the two were believed to have had a more intimate relationship and some people said that they claimed to be man and wife.

When a guest would stay at the Benders’ bed and breakfast inn, the hosts would give the guest a seat of honor at the table which was positioned over a trap door that led down into the cellar. With the victim’s back to the curtain Kate would distract the guest, while John Bender or his son would come from behind the curtain and strike the guest on the right hand side of the skull with a hammer. The victim’s throat was then cut by one of the women to ensure his death. The body was then dropped through the trap door. Once in the cellar, the body would be stripped and later buried somewhere on the property, often in the orchard. More than a dozen bullet holes were found in the roof and sides of the room and the media speculated that some of the victims had attempted to fight back after being hit with the hammer.

Lake Travis Phantom~

In 2007, a Texas Professor took a group of students to Lake Travis to gather biological samples. Documenting the outing with a new & unfamiliar digital camera, she took this photo as everyone was unloading to insure the flash feature was on & working. Later, as she was reviewing the photos of the field outing, she noticed two points of light to the right of the first photo. Believing this was an animal close by & unnoticed, she asked a colleague at the university to enhance the photo so that she could show her students how close wildlife could be to them undetected. Her colleague took the image & performed a light-blast test to reveal the “animal” but to their surprise, lightening the photo revealed a bizarre humanoid type being, approx. 10-12 feet tall within 30-40 feet from them apparently observing the group! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WAS SEEN OR HEARD while they collected their samples at Lake Travis when this photo was taken.

“Robert”, The Doll

Robert, who is also known as “Robert the Haunted Doll”, or “Robert the Devil Doll”, is a doll that is supposedly cursed or haunted that was owned by painter and author Robert Eugene Otto when he was a child. Eugene is said to have received the doll around 1904 by an African servant skilled in voodoo who carried a grudge against the family. From the beginning. Eugene’s parent’s claimed there was something strange about the doll; they would hear Eugene having conversations with Robert, and what sounded like the doll talking back. Over time, the Otto family claimed that they started hearing Robert giggle and scurry from room to room. Neighbors claimed that when they walked up the driveway to the Otto’s mansion, they would see Robert moving from window to window. People even claimed they saw Robert’s expression change as they watched him. When Eugene died in 1974, the doll was relegated to the attic of the mansion where it was eventually discovered by the ten year old daughter of the new owners. It wasn’t long before the child’s parents awoke in the night to find their daughter screaming and sobbing, terrified that the doll was moving around and trying to attack her. To this day, she tells interviewers that the doll was possessed and earnestly trying to kill her. Robert now resides in the Fort East Martello Museum in Key West, where he is a popular tourist attraction. Legend has it that you must politely ask Robert’s permission before you photograph him; if his head doesn’t tip in affirmation, then you risk a curse being placed on your family. Robert was the inspiration for the character “Chuckie” in the movie “Child’s Play”.
